Note the two different types of axle threads. I theorize that the coarse threads are for cars with ball bearings (presumably all of the cars with front drum brakes) since the nut is meant to be cinched down rather than backed off to allow for some play in the bearings (necessary for roller bearings but built into ball bearings).

Duncan, the plot thickens: Just checked and from what I can tell my ball bearing spindles have 5/8 x 14 TPI BSF thread. Not a British fastener aficionado by any means but isn't that fine thread?

The axle nut thread is 5/8" and I suspect BS TPI 14. It is a course thread. My BS Dies only go to 1/2". So I am unsure. However I don't know absolutely but am quite sure this Stub Axle came from a 1958 +4. It still has drum brakes - I maintain this +4 for the Widow and She still drives it. At one time I had the broken RH stub axle. But must of tossed it.
