In reply to # 12423 by DuncanCharlton Yes, I'm sure Button will chime in, since he added an OD unit to his Moss box some years back.

Not yet. Button lost his password. So have I. However, I was permanently logged in. That will end when I leave for Quebec.

There are a few companies selling bell housings, conversions and gearboxes (there are more than you might think). Lots of suggestions, but not much in the way of good information or even good pictures of a conversion in the chassis, with the body on the car.

I talked to Jason Len (we went to high school together) at XKs Unlimited, who has actually done a conversion. He offered to help, but when I look at his '70 +8, it appears to have a replacement chassis, and he uses a TVR bell housing. Maybe this is easier than I imagine. I may drive up to SLO and take a look at his car.

Duncan, I don't know who Mike Anthony is, but if you PM me and send me a contact, that would be helpful.

No one said anything about widening the Morgan's chassis. The comment was that the chassis was narrow. This limits the space in the footwell and between the seats (which limits the space for a Laycock OD, maybe... So I have been told). While this appeared to be the easiest change, a change of transmission output shaft may be required, which means sending the thing out, and I don't like to send things out anymore.

Maybe bolting the compact McLoed to the bell housing extension using a CNC'd adapter and a modified primary shaft is the best way to proceed. More measurements to be taken. And perhaps a drawing. Maybe the compact McLoed will fit into the same space as the Moss.

This is not unbolting one gearbox and bolting in the new 5 speed so far as I can tell.

I don't feel like taking the entire car apart to do this when installing the chassis parts that I have will give me more of what I desire, and I can do each project in a weekend, if not an afternoon.

Eventually, I will get around to talking to everyone, then making up my own method of doing the installation if I finally decide to make a switch.

What I am looking for is someone with a narrow chassis +8 that has actually done the conversion. Two or three examples would be even better. So far, I have one.

Oh, and I have never had any sort of compromise with a lightened flywheel, even when the weight was cut in half. This includes my 4 cylinder A series engines (one for myself, and several for friends), a Jaguar 4.2 E Type 6 cylinder and a few V8s, mostly Fords. I am pretty sure that if I install the lighter flywheel on the 3.5 Rover, the throttle response will improve, and the idle will not change at all. Shifting may improve as well.
